Rough Diamond Crystals

Diamonds

The word Diamond comes from ancient Greece. They are made of carbon and are formed in a structure called a diamond lattice face-centered cubic crystal. Diamonds have the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any bulk material.

Most natural diamonds are formed at high temperature and pressure at depths of 140 to 190 kilometers deep in the Earth’s mantle. Diamonds are brought close to the Earth’s surface by violent volcanic eruptions in rocks called Kimberlites. Diamonds can also be produced synthetically and in a process called chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

Diamonds are the hardest substance known to man, they have a hardness of 10 on the Moh’s scale. Only a diamond can cut another diamond. They come in almost all the colors of the spectrum naturally and the color can be changed or enhanced by a heat or radiation process when they are formed.

White Diamonds are the most sought after color and value can vary greatly by color and quality. They come in a coloring system of D,E,F,G,H,I,J with D being the most desirable color to have and the most expensive. Most commercial diamond jewelry will have F, G, H color quality diamonds mounted.

The world’s leading authority on diamonds is GIA Gemological Institute of America. You can read more about diamonds and fancy colored diamonds at the GIA website. The number one thing one should know about gemstones and diamonds in particular is Carat, Clarity, Color and Cut the 4 C’s.
